Captain Johnson

  1. CAPTAIN JOHNSON - A computer painting created for the book, "MASTERS OF THE WEIRD TALE: HODGSON," published by Centipede Press in 2009.

There once was a man, a real man like Captain Johnson, master of a three-mast sailing ship in the 1800s. His ship, and many others like his, were built of wood in shipyards along the east coast of America from Maine to Massachusetts. They were expert shipbuilders with knowledge of the awesome power of wind and wave, and they built noble and beautiful sailing vessels ornamented with figureheads and gold leaf décor.

This captain, and others like him with ocean charts and a mastery of mast, spar, and canvas, steered their ships over dancing waves and with winds whistling in their rigging, to destinations far and wide, always challenged by the awesome dangers of the ocean . . .

    For just a few years . . .

And then, like the covered wagon trains and the pony express, they played their part in the history of man for just a little while, and then they were gone.

But not forgotten, the tales of the courage and daring of those early sailors and their sailing ships lives on in books and on film, and in the memory of people today, like me, and I hope, you, who have an appreciation of who they were, and what they did.
